Balayage vs highlights: which is right for you?
Two popular colour techniques compared, so you can tell which suits your goals.
The short version. Highlights are applied in foils from the root down for a structured, uniform blonde. Balayage is hand-painted onto the surface for a softer, sun-kissed, lived-in look with a seamless grow-out.
What are Highlights?
Traditional highlighting uses aluminum foil to separate strands of hair. Lightener is applied from the root down to the ends, and the foil traps heat to process the hair evenly. Highlights create a pronounced, uniform lift and can be tailored to be heavily blonde or more natural depending on the foil placement.
What is Balayage?
Balayage is a French word built from balayer, to sweep. Instead of using foils right at the root, the lightener is hand-painted directly onto the surface of the hair, starting softly at the mid-lengths and becoming denser toward the ends. The result is a bespoke, dimensional, and beautifully lived-in look that mimics how hair naturally lightens in the sun.
Which one requires more maintenance?
Highlights grow out with a solid line of demarcation at the root, which usually requires a touch-up every 6 to 8 weeks. Balayage, by design, leaves a soft blend at the root, meaning there is no harsh line as it grows. Many balayage clients can wait 3 to 6 months between lightening sessions, coming in for quick glosses or toners in between.
Can I get balayage if I already have highlights?
Absolutely. If you want to move away from the high-maintenance cycle of traditional foils, we can transition you to a lived-in balayage. We use a root smudge or colour melt to blur the existing foil lines at the root, creating that seamless, melted effect while adding soft dimension through the ends.
What should I book?
If you want brightness right to the scalp or a very icy, uniform blonde, book a blonding service or highlights.
