Grey blending in Red Deer: what it is, and what it actually costs

The service most people mean when they say they are tired of chasing their roots every four weeks.

Kevin.Murphy YOUNG.AGAIN, the range used on greying and brittle hair at Hello Beauty Lounge

The short version. Grey blending softens grey so it reads as highlights rather than regrowth. Grey coverage does the opposite — it takes the grey out entirely. Blending usually needs no bleach on lighter hair, grows out without a line, and is booked here as a partial or full highlight with a gloss: from $165 and from $215 respectively.

What is grey blending?

Grey blending uses fine, soft-edged pieces of colour to make grey hair read as dimension instead of regrowth. Rather than painting every white strand a single opaque shade, we work light and dark pieces around the grey so the eye reads highlights. The grey is still there. It has simply stopped announcing itself in a hard line at your part.

It is the technique most people are actually asking for when they say they are “tired of chasing their roots every four weeks”.

Grey blending or grey coverage — which one do you want?

These are two different services and picking the wrong one is the most common reason people are unhappy with a grey appointment. Coverage removes the grey. Blending keeps it and disguises it.

If you are more than about 50% grey and want it gone, coverage is the honest answer. Below that, and especially if you have started to like the silver at your temples, blending will cost you far less over a year and look better while it grows.

Does grey blending use bleach?

Usually not on lighter or already-highlighted hair, where a high-lift tint or a demi-permanent gloss does the work. On dark hair it often does, because grey cannot be made lighter than it already is — the surrounding dark hair has to come up to meet it.

That is the real answer to a question people ask hoping to hear “never”. What we will tell you at the consultation is whether your hair can take it today, and if it cannot, we will say so and plan it differently. Every lightening service here runs bond repair through it.

Can you do grey blending on dark hair?

Yes, and it is the version that needs the most planning. On dark hair the contrast between white strands and your natural depth is at its widest, so blending means building mid-tones that sit between the two rather than simply lightening.

Expect it to take longer, expect it to cost more than a partial highlight on light hair, and expect us to talk about doing it across two appointments if there is old box colour in the lengths. Dark hair that has been coloured at home is the single most common thing that makes a grey blend take two sessions instead of one.

How long does it take, and does it damage your hair?

Budget two to three hours for a partial and three to four for a full blend with a gloss. Whether it damages your hair depends entirely on what is already on it and how far we are asking it to travel in one sitting.

Grey hair behaves differently from pigmented hair: it is often coarser, more resistant at the cuticle, and it takes toner unevenly. That is a handling problem, not a damage problem — but it is why a grey blend done quickly and cheaply tends to go brassy within a fortnight.

What it costs in Red Deer

We publish our prices, which most salons here do not. Grey blending is booked as a highlight service because that is what it is:

  • Money piece / face frame — from $115. The cheapest way to soften grey around your face.
  • Partial highlight — from $165. Top and sides, where grey shows most.
  • Full highlight — from $215. All over, for heavier or more even grey.
  • Toner & gloss refresh — from $75. Between appointments, to kill brass.

See the full service menu, or take the two-minute hair quiz and we will tell you which of those we would actually book you for before you speak to anyone.

Keeping it from going brassy at home

Grey and blended hair goes warm faster than pigmented hair, because there is no natural pigment left to fight the yellow. Two things from our shelf do most of the work:

  • BLONDE.ANGEL — a violet treatment for blonde and greying hair, $57.00 for 250ml. Use it as a treatment, not daily.
  • YOUNG.AGAIN — an immortelle-oil treatment for ageing and brittle hair, $62.00. Grey hair is usually coarser and drier, and this is what we reach for when it feels wiry.

Both are on the shelf at the salon. There is no online checkout — add them to your list on the product page and we will hold them.

Common questions

Does grey blending use bleach?

Usually not on lighter or already-highlighted hair, where a high-lift tint or a demi-permanent gloss does the work. On dark hair it often does, because grey cannot be lightened further and the surrounding dark hair has to be brought up to meet it. We assess condition at the consultation and will tell you if your hair cannot take it in one sitting.

Can you do grey blending on dark hair?

Yes, and it needs the most planning. On dark hair the contrast between white strands and your natural depth is widest, so blending means building mid-tones between the two rather than simply lightening. It takes longer, and if there is old box colour in the lengths it is often planned across two appointments.

What is the difference between grey blending and grey coverage?

Grey blending keeps the grey and disguises it as highlights, growing out with no hard line and needing a visit every 8 to 12 weeks. Grey coverage fills the grey in entirely, leaves a visible regrowth line, and needs a touch-up every 4 to 6 weeks.

How much does grey blending cost in Red Deer?

At Hello Beauty Lounge it is booked as a highlight service: money piece from $115, partial highlight from $165, full highlight from $215, and a toner or gloss refresh from $75. Grey coverage as a solid all-over colour is from $135.

How long does grey blending take?

Two to three hours for a partial blend, and three to four hours for a full blend finished with a gloss.
