October at the Lounge: it is the furnace, not the frost

Static, hat hair and a December that is already filling up. What to do about all three.

Kevin.Murphy HYDRATE-ME.MASQUE, the October pick at Hello Beauty Lounge in Red Deer

What is in this one. Why the furnace is the real problem this month, what a toque actually does to your hair, why December is already filling, and the four things we are reaching for on the shelf.

The furnace is doing more damage than the weather

September was the summer's bill arriving. October is a different problem entirely, and it starts the week you turn the heat on.

Forced-air heating pulls the moisture out of a house and out of everything in it. Hair that behaved perfectly well in a damp September gets brittle, static-prone and full of flyaways by the third week of October, and most people blame the cold. It is not the cold. You spend maybe forty minutes a day outside. You spend the other twenty-three hours in dry indoor air.

The two things that actually help are a masque once a week and something left in the hair rather than rinsed out. Neither is complicated, and both matter more now than in any other month.

What a toque actually does

Hat season is here until roughly April, and it does three specific things worth knowing about:

  • Flattens the root. Not damage, just compression. This is the month a dry finishing spray earns its place, because you can lift the root without washing.
  • Creates friction at the hairline. The band of a tight toque rubs the finest, most fragile hair you have. Wool is the worst offender. A satin-lined hat, or a satin band, removes the problem entirely.
  • Makes static worse. Dry hair plus a synthetic lining is a static machine. This is a moisture problem more than a hat problem.

The one thing worth changing: do not pull a hat onto wet hair before walking to the car. Wet hair is at its most fragile, and compressing it under a hat in freezing air is how the breakage at your hairline starts.

December is already filling

Every year the same thing happens. Nobody thinks about party hair until the first week of December, and by then the evenings are gone.

Two things worth knowing now:

  • Halloween is a Saturday this year. Saturdays are our shortest day, 10am to 5pm, and they book out first. If you want something done on the 31st, that is not a week-of booking.
  • Party styling is on the menu. A Special Event Up-Do is $95 and a Half-Up Formal Style is $75. For colour, the last two weeks of December are the hardest appointments in the year to get, so a late-November colour that carries you through is usually the smarter plan.

Going bold for Halloween? Creative & Vivid Colour starts at $325 and usually needs pre-lightening, which is quoted separately — so that one genuinely needs a consultation first, not a booking two days before.

Thanksgiving weekend

We close on every statutory holiday. Thanksgiving Monday falls on 12 October this year, which is a Monday we are closed anyway, so nothing changes: we are open Tuesday the 13th as normal, 10am to 7pm. The Saturday before, the 10th, is one of the busier Saturdays of the autumn, so book ahead rather than dropping in.

On the shelf this month

Four things, all aimed at the same problem — dry indoor air:

  • HYDRATE-ME MASQUE, $57.00 for 200ml — a moisturising and smoothing masque for frizzy or coarse, coloured hair. The single most useful thing you can add in October. Once a week, not daily.
  • UN.TANGLED, $45.00 — a leave-in conditioner and detangler. Static is dryness with a costume on, and this is the fix.
  • FRESH.HAIR, $28.00 for 100ml — a dry cleaning spray. Hat hair without washing, and the cheapest thing on this list.
  • HEATED.DEFENSE, $41.00 — leave-in heat protection. You will be blow-drying far more often now than you did in July.

If your scalp is the thing that has gone dry and tight rather than your ends, the Scalp.Spa Scrub at $55.00 is a pre-wash exfoliator, and the Scalp.Spa Brush is $18.00 and does more than it has any right to.

Not sure a full bottle is worth it? Most ranges have a 40ml travel size at around $10.50. Everything is collected at the salon — there is no online checkout, so build a list on the product page and we will hold it. More on buying Kevin.Murphy in Red Deer.

What people are booking

Two things are running well ahead of everything else this autumn.

Grey blending keeps climbing — softening grey into highlights rather than chasing roots every four weeks. It is the lower-maintenance option through the months when nobody wants to drive to a salon in the dark, and we published the full pricing last month.

The other is condition. Hair Botox from $120 if the problem is frizz and dullness, K18 at $40 if your hair feels like it has given up. If you are not sure which is yours, the two-minute quiz will tell you what we would book you for, free, before you speak to anyone.

Still holding 2027 wedding dates

Next summer's Saturdays are going now. Wedding-day hair starts at $225 with a required $150 trial, and Saturdays from June to September need three or more services to hold the date. The bridal profile takes two minutes and comes back with a written quote and a rough morning timeline, usually the same day.

Where to find us

4919 59 St, Unit 120, Red Deer. Tuesday to Saturday, and we take bookings from Sylvan Lake, Blackfalds, Lacombe, Penhold, Innisfail, Ponoka, Olds and across Red Deer County.

Common questions

Why does my hair get static in October?

Forced-air heating pulls moisture out of a house and out of everything in it, so hair that behaved well in a damp September becomes brittle and static-prone once the furnace goes on. It is dry indoor air rather than the cold outside, because you spend far more of the day indoors. A weekly masque and a leave-in conditioner are the two things that help most.

How do I stop my hat flattening my hair?

A toque compresses the root rather than damaging it, so a dry finishing spray such as FRESH.HAIR at $28.00 lets you lift the root again without washing. Avoid pulling a hat onto wet hair before going outside, because wet hair is at its most fragile and compressing it in freezing air is how breakage at the hairline starts.

Are you open on Thanksgiving Monday?

Hello Beauty Lounge closes on every statutory holiday. Thanksgiving Monday falls on 12 October 2026, which is a Monday, and the salon is closed on Mondays all year, so nothing changes that week. We are open as normal on Tuesday 13 October, 10am to 7pm.

When should I book for Christmas party hair?

October. A Special Event Up-Do is $95 and a Half-Up Formal Style is $75, and the last two weeks of December are the hardest colour appointments of the year to get. Halloween falls on a Saturday in 2026, and Saturdays are our shortest day at 10am to 5pm, so they book out first.
